If you've spent any time around music production, you've probably heard both terms used interchangeably. Electronic music, computer music, many people assume they're talking about the same thing.

And to be fair, in today's production environment, it's easy to see why.

Most modern music is created on computers. We open a DAW, load virtual instruments, use plugins, and build entire tracks without ever touching a piece of hardware. Because of that, the line between electronic music and computer music often feels invisible.

But despite how closely connected they are today, they didn't start as the same thing.



Electronic Music Is About the Sound

Electronic music is music created using electronic technology to generate or manipulate sound.

That includes synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and countless other electronic instruments.

Genres like techno, house, trance, and drum & bass all fall under the umbrella of electronic music because the sounds themselves are primarily created through electronic means.

What's important is that electronic music doesn't necessarily require a computer.

Long before laptops and DAWs became standard studio tools, artists were already creating electronic music using analog synthesizers, sequencers, and hardware drum machines. Much of the electronic music released throughout the 1970s and 1980s was made entirely without a computer.

In other words, electronic music is defined more by the source of the sound than by the tools used to arrange it.



Computer Music Is About the Process

Computer music approaches things from a different angle.

Rather than focusing on the sound itself, computer music focuses on how music is created.

Any music that is composed, generated, analyzed, processed, or performed through computers can be considered computer music.

That means the genre doesn't really matter.

A classical piano piece generated through an algorithm could fall under computer music. At the same time, a techno track produced entirely on analog hardware could be electronic music without technically being computer music.

The field of computer music also extends far beyond traditional music production.

Areas such as algorithmic composition, AI-assisted music creation, audio programming, real-time sound processing, and generative systems all belong to the broader world of computer music.

Because of this, computer music is often viewed less as a genre and more as a technical or academic discipline.



Why Do People Mix Them Up?

The answer is simple.

Today, most electronic music is made on computers.

A modern producer might create a techno track using software synthesizers, virtual drum machines, audio plugins, and a DAW. In that situation, the music is both electronic music and computer music at the same time.

The overlap is enormous.

But the concepts are still slightly different.

Electronic music describes the character of the sound.

Computer music describes the method used to create it.

That's why the two terms can overlap without being identical.



The Line Between Them Keeps Getting Smaller

Technology is moving quickly.

Artificial intelligence, machine learning, generative audio systems, and real-time processing tools are becoming increasingly common in music production.

Electronic music was once closely tied to synthesizers and hardware instruments. Today, code, software, algorithms, and data-driven systems play an equally important role in shaping sound.

As a result, electronic music continues to move closer toward the world of computer music.

At the same time, computer music is no longer limited to research labs and universities. Techniques that were once considered experimental are now showing up in club tracks, film scores, game audio, and mainstream pop production.

The gap between the two fields is becoming smaller every year.



So What's the Difference?

The simplest way to think about it is this:

Electronic music refers to music created through electronic sound sources and electronic technology.

Computer music refers to music that is created, processed, or generated using computers.

They're closely related, and in many modern productions they overlap completely.

But they aren't exactly the same thing.

One describes the sound.

The other describes the process.

And understanding that difference gives us a better picture of how modern music production has evolved—from hardware synthesizers and drum machines to software, algorithms, and the increasingly digital future of music creation.
